The Emperor Augustus of Rome was born with the name Octavian on September 23, 63 B.C.
(Chew, 1995). He then took the name Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus in 44 B.C., something that occurred after the murder of his great uncle, Julius Caesar (1995). Julius Caesar is
infamous and many call him just Caesar. In fact, there is an interesting history associated with the family name. It was Julius Caesar who took the name as his
imperial title, but of course, his grand-nephew and adopted son Octavius would become the future emperor Augustus ("Caesar," 1998). From the time the well known Caesar ruled, however,
Caesar became the family name of all the reigning emperor and his heirs (1998). When Nero, the last of the Julio-Claudian line had passed on all his successors from
Galba and later were called Caesar and so what had just been a family name, became an important title (1998). Augustuss relationship with the great Caesar is
significant. In his will, Caesar had adopted Octavian and made him an heir(Chew, 1995). In 43 B.C. Octavian, Marc Antony and another Roman General, Marcus Lepidus, formed the second
Triumvirate to rule Rome (1995). In 40 B.C. Antony married Octavians sister but would leave her later on for Cleopatra (1995). When Antony gave Roman provinces to his children through
Cleopatra, Octavian declared war on Antony and in 31 B.C. the Roman Navy under Agrippa defeated the combined fleets of Antony and Cleopatra; not long after that both had committed
suicide (1995). In the year 27 B.C., the Roman Senate gave Octavian the name Augustus which translated to"the exalted " (Chew, 1995). At the same time, they gave him the
