70). Enter the community service volunteer! In virtually every city, town and village in the United States there is a contingent of helpful volunteers helping to do everything
from sort books at the local library to cleaning out dog kennels at the city shelter. Without the help of these millions of donated man-hours, communities would face a
hardship in trying to get everything done. Volunteers are the lifeblood of any community, and it speaks well for those communities who have active volunteer organizations. The benefit received
by the community from volunteer service is in many ways priceless. Yet it is not only the community that profits but the volunteer as well. By donating time
and effort, volunteers receive a sense of community pride and a feeling of self worth. Those communities with a strong contingent of volunteers in various organizations seem to be
communities with a more neighborly feel, as though the residents are family. An excellent illustration that places community service in context is told by one professor. "My Rutgers students
were divided into groups to work on specific service projects. Some were sent to work at a homeless shelter, others to paint the plugs of fire hydrants in a
nearby community. After a couple of weeks, the painting crew complained. This is community service? We should be helping the needy, not painting hydrants!" The professor
then had the students meet with an official from the community, and his explanation made all the difference: "It turned out that the communitys firefighters had wanted the plugs painted
