in terms of the role of the press in government is that government and the press have distinctly different views of their own goals, the goals of the other, and
the way in which the two interact. Dan Bartlett, Director of Communications under the current Bush White House Administration, states very specific goals for the government in terms of
their use of the press. Bartlett separates out the use of the press for candidates and the use of the press for the existing politicians, arguing that the way
in which the press reports reflections of the existing President can be significant, while press reporting of a simple candidate rarely influences anything but the election process. As a
result, campaign communications and the press are different from the communications of politicians currently in office. Bartlett then goes on to state the goals for the use of
the press in government. Specifically, Bartlett states that press-related communications in politics are used for the implementation of legislation, to alter political decision-making, and to maintain systems of checks
and balances. In conjunction, Bartlett also recognized that the press often holds existing politicians (the President, for example) to standards that are based in views of the Presidents or
politicians of the past. As a result, the press becomes a kind of starting point from which political comparisons are made. In a very different view of the
