officers are there to help. They also chase criminals, risking their own lives, and follow protocol. There is the beat cop who gets to know a particular neighborhood. Yet, whenever
officers are not on duty, they are really never considered to be civilians. Policing is a continual proposition. If they see crime, they must act. Their actions go beyond mere
social conscience and go to duty. In comprehending police social types, a student requests how different roles may be discerned and these roles are " the crime fighter, the
social agent, the law enforcer and the watchman." First, the role of the crime fighter is quite obvious. Police officers continually fight crime and that is their most prominent role.
First, what is a crime? A crime is any activity that is against the law and criminal activity is discerned and fought by officers. Someone may call the police to
report a crime, the officer takes a statement and then creates a report. In very serious crimes, where a dangerous criminal may be loose, there is an active search for
the individual. For example, police officers may put up roadblocks, search in a particular known location or canvas an area. They fight crime sometimes through undercover work. An officer may
pose as an ordinary citizen or mark, or he may pose as a drug dealer or drug user to apprehend those involved in high stakes drug businesses. Police officers fight
all types of crimes from shoplifting to murder and they do so in different ways. Police officers are generally first responders when a call comes in which references a crime
that has been committed. Sometimes, detectives are summoned as well. Police officers act to control and prevent crime, but a large part of the effort is in investigative work. Police
