of Health Hazards in the Workplace When we think of hazards in the workplace, we think of familiar, if unexpected, incidents: a secretary opens too many drawers and a
file cabinet topples over; a maintenance man leaves a hammer on top of a ladder, steps away to get something, and the hammer falls; a worker slips on an oily
factory floor; a loading dock employee picks up a box the wrong way and throws his back out; or an executive misses her footing and falls down the stairs.
These types of hazards are common in every workplace, and the ways to deal with them are well known. While its important to recognize these types of hazards and
guard against them, the occupational hygienists role is less concerned with these hazards, which may be classified as safety concerns, and more concerned with other issues, such as toxic substances.
One source defines the hygienists role as follows: "Occupational hygienists are responsible for recognising, evaluating and controlling environmental hazards resulting from physical, chemical or biological factors in the workplace.
By assessing and resolving practical problems in a wide range of settings, occupational hygienists help protect workforce health and wellbeing at all levels, and in all areas" (Occupational hygienist in
close up, 2004). In addition, occupational hygienists assess "potential risks to workforce safety in environments including factories, offices and building sites" (Occupational hygienist in close up, 2004). Their work
