and why a person might seek a commission. Discussion The military establishment is a world apart from civilian life, and those who have never served cannot imagine what its like.
Once a person enlists or begins his or her training, they find themselves in an organization that provides everything they need, but also cuts them off from the life they
knew. Marines, soldiers, airmen, sailors, "Coasties"-all become part of something much larger than themselves. The Marine Corps, Army, Air Force, Navy, and Coast Guard provide housing, clothing, food and pay
(i.e., the basic needs) and in return, have the right to put the individual in harms way. Freedoms are greatly curtailed since military personnel have to abide by strict regulations
governing everything from the appearance of their uniforms to the time they get up in the morning. Their lives are regulated down to the minute, and they are expected to
follow these regulations and obey orders without question. In many ways, the military is one of the most unnatural environments its possible to imagine. But it can also be
very rewarding. Friendships formed in the military often last a lifetime. Its a clich?, but there is opportunity for travel; job specialties are challenging and intriguing (where else would a
19-year old have the responsibility of keeping an airplane flying?); and there is the undeniable pride in serving ones country. Still, the downside is the constant monitoring, the lack of
freedom, and when deployed, the very real danger of injury or death. Then too, the military must be able to respond to crises all over the world very quickly, which
