There is a diversity of viewpoints as to the role of the individual in society. Some of these viewpoints are controversial to say the least. If we stick to those views that are representative of the professional and accredited representatives of our society, however, we see somewhat less divergence and somewhat less controversy. Even then though we do find differences in opinion as to how an individual should interact with society and for what purpose. Most agree, however, that the role of the individual in society revolves, in part, around societal ethics and morals and societal structure. Society is the collective result of the interactions of individuals. It is a fascinating element of social interaction. While many human traits are inherited genetically, others are learned. Society is a learned set of behaviors. A child is exposed to the dictates of its society from the time he or she is born. Through their parents, grand parents, siblings, and other contacts they learn what is considered appropriate by societal norms and what is not. This is true of behaviors as diverse as diet preference and sexual activity. Two classic works are extremely useful in allowing us to understand the role of society as opposed to that of the individual. These are "The Marx-Engels Reader" written collectively by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engells and Michel Foucalts "History of Sexuality". The latter book is an overview of ethics and of the selfs relationship with the self while the "Marx-Engels Reader" concerns mans ability to think and to reason in terms of his ethics and his morality. ...
