Computer and information systems managers focus on implementing technology and assisting in the construction of a process to oversee computer operations ("Computer and Information Systems Managers," 2009). They essentially run the operations aligned with the computers at any business location. Those involved in this line of work also coordinate all computer related events that occur at the firm ("Computer and Information Systems Managers," 2009). They do more than just run an operation, or trouble-shoot when necessary. They also help to determine the business and technical goals of a company, often consulting with high level executives ("Computer and Information Systems Managers," 2009). The role requisites a good understanding of business practices as well as technology ("Computer and Information Systems Managers," 2009). First and foremost an IT manager is a manager. Management is a very difficult job because one is dealing with many unique personalities as well as trying to implement corporate goals. According to Phillips (2002), there are four specific functions or categories of management. The four primary functions of the manager are planning, organizing, motivating and controlling (Phillips, 2002). The author goes on to explain that the things that affect the functions are communications and creativity (Phillips, 2002). A good IT manager who is involved with planning and controlling systems, as well as motivating the people who are working with him, must also be very organized. Ideally, in respect to motivation, a manager will adopt a transformational leadership style.
