paper explores the function of the gods in the text, and how they illustrate the theme of the text, which we can argue is the power of the god to judge human behavior. Discussion The audiences of Euripides time were already familiar with the story of Medea, the scorned princess who exacts a hideous vengeance on her husband Jason for setting her aside and marrying the daughter of Creon, King of Corinth. By the time the play opens, Medea has killed her own brother to help Jason; she has slain the serpent that guarded the Golden Fleece; she has killed Pelias, king of Colchis, and "pinned" the crime on his daughters (Euripides). She has committed all of these terrible crimes in the name of love, only to have Jason scorn her, first because she is a "barbarian," not a Greek; and second because she is a sorceress. Medea is in fact the granddaughter of Helios, the Sun God, and her power is quite real and terrible. The audiences would have known all this, so they didnt come to the play in the expectation of seeing a new story or a novel twist on an old tale. They already knew what was going to happen. Thus, we can assume that they were interested in seeing this story play out once again, and that they found meaning in it. It seems logical to assume that they saw it as the working of fate, and the implacable will of the gods being fulfilled, despite Jasons attempt to put Medea aside. There are several things that support this theory.
