A 5 page evaluation of the role of the federal government in protecting our natural resources. This question addresses the question of just how well designed is our government in the performance of this function. The author contends that while the government may at times appear inept in this regard, it has had a tremendous impact on environmental policy. The point is presented that our government functions just the way that it was intended to in that it reflects all of the viewpoints surrounding an issue, not just those of the most politically influential. The federal government is intimately involved in practically every aspect of our lives. Not the least of this involvement revolves around the regulation of the very
environment in which we live. Although often inept and, by some standards, very poorly designed for the task of environmental protection; the government, from our President to Congress and
down to the federal courts, has had a tremendous impact on environmental policy. Regardless of how perfunctory the role of the federal government in environmental regulation in the U.S.,
the unfortunate fact is that without this oversight our environment would be in an even more perilous state today than it is.
The current state of our environment demands, in fact, continued governmental involvement in protecting it. Our rampant population growth has resulted in more and more environmental impacts.
From the discharge of toxic wastes to the destruction of wetlands and other valuable ecological areas in the name of development, our environmental impact is growing at a phenomenal rate.
So too has the volume of laws which have been created to provide at least some semblance of protection to the environment. From the 1960s to the present,
in fact, environmental regulation has been in the forefront of legislative efforts. Throughout the European presence on this continent land and its corresponding
natural resources have been viewed as commodities, items to be bought and sold and modified according to the desires and whims of their "owners". The view of natural resources
