have misconceptions about the role of the court administrator because they are used to seeing television shows or film where judges do a lot of the work. One may remember
a time when the court administrator was non-existent. It should be emphasized that the role of the court administrator has changed over time.
Prior to the middle of the twentieth century, judges would make most of the essential courthouse decisions. They basically ran their courthouses and this was accepted practice for
quite some time. In fact, during the early part of the 1960s, very few courts in the United States would employ professional managers (Henley & Suhr, 2004). Today, on the
other hand, most courts in America use the services of a business manager who is usually dubbed a court administrator (Henley & Suhr, 2004). Part of the reason for the
change in role has to do with the fact that courts face a number of challenges today (Hartley & Bates, 2006). They have growing caseloads, diverse populations, technological advances, and
the need to conduct community outreach, education, and coordination with other agencies (Hartley & Bates, 2006). Authors note: "They must do all this, and more, under ever-tighter budgets and increased
spending accountability" (Hartley & Bates, 2006, 81). The role of the administrator is to accept important administrative tasks from the judges; in this way, the judges have time to
