One trend has been the increasing level role of the supervisors as mentors to their charges. that those who are supervised have differing needs other than pure direction. By satisfying these needs a supervisor may maximise the performance of those they are supervising. This emphasises the
role of the supervisor as a mentor and the value that this aspect of supervision may provide in both educational settings or a workplace environments. There are countless studies
that indicate the value of mentoring as part of supervision, not only in the control of the supervisees, but also in the passing on of knowledge and values, the development
of the relationship leading to better results and the supervisor acting as a role model ( Jackson, 2002). The ability to have a positive role model to help the individual
develop, especially when the supervises are children or adolescents, can also be expanded to the aiding of emotional and social growth (Bordy, 1991). The idea of a supervisor being
a mentor is not new, however, the perceptive that this should or could be a major role of the supervisor has been less popular until recent years. Supervisors had had
roles such as ensuring that targets, educational or production, are met or that safety is maintained. However, there is increasing attention paid to this less tangible role which can have
a great deal of impact for the learners, employees or other supervisees. This increased role can be seen in many areas, there are increasing number of teacher mentors to aid
