a glass ceiling in place preventing many women rising to the higher ranks. Where women have gained promotions it has been argued that have had to be masculine in style,
forgo the aspirations families or be twice as good at the job as a male colleague. Unfortunately, this is still the case today for many women. There has been a
proliferation of equal rights initiatives, from legislation to company positive discrimination policies. Those who would like to believe that we have progressed to a true meritocracy only need to look
at the lack of senior female management to assess that this is not the case. In the US in the Fortune 500
companies only 11.2% of the senior managers are women. In 1997 in a report by the International Labour Organisation looking at the progress of women in corporate America the author,
Linda Wirth stated "Almost universally, women have failed to reach leading positions in major corporations...irrespective of their abilities. Women generally fare best in industries employing large numbers of women, such
as health and community services and the hotel and catering industry" (CLC, 2001). If we remember that there is a history in the United States of affirmative action, this must
be seen as an indication of the continued and effective existence of a glass ceiling. If this was taken globally a United Nations report the same year indicated that this
was only between 2% - 3% of all senior management positions (CLC, 2001). The companies that discriminate may be loosing out
of the value that female man managers can give. The United States company Catalysis undertook a survey in Australia, looking at the performance of companies with women on the board
