of Sam, in Athol Fugards, Master Harold...and the Boys, plays a variety of different roles within this story, each of which highlights important themes and issues. While Sam is
a seemingly simple character on the surface, his ability to provide so much to the other characters in this story reveals a depth and complexity to him as well.
More specifically, Sam evolves into a father-figure for the lost and lonely Hally, and he is a true friend and mentor to Willie, the other servant in this story.
Sam and Willie work for a white man who operates a restaurant. Their employer often puts them in charge of his
son, Hally, who is young and in desperate need of both attention and guidance. In this regard, Sam plays the role of a surrogate father to Hally. Hallys
own father both neglects him and is a drunk, and therefore the bond that forms between Hally and Sam is a very significant one.
The fact that Hallys father allows Sam to oversee Hally and have such a significant influence in his life highlights just how little Hallys father wants
