what was considered conservative thought was reserved for the democrats in the beginning and anything radical was perhaps seen as a republican approach to politics. Today it seems somewhat reversed,
with many arguing that the parties do not necessarily stand for anything that makes it distinctively different than the other party or parties. However, the parties do still have particular
roles they must play in Congress. The following paper examines the role of political parties in Congress. Political Parties and Congress As mentioned in the introduction, the role of
the parties has altered over the course of history in the United States. Because of this change the parties do not necessarily play the same roles, or more accurately, enforce
the same involvement as they once did. In the past the parties were far more defined and differed from one another more obviously than they do today. In those differences
lie some of their roles or responsibilities in Congress. This is because the parties are expected to uphold their parties beliefs and ideals in Congress. In essence, it should be
understood that in the past the manner in which the parties addressed their parties particular needs and ideals in Congress were far stronger than they are today. This particular
aspect is further argued by one author who indicates that, "In America, the national parties play a relatively limited role in electoral politics because over recent years, election campaigns have
become candidate orientated rather than party-orientated" The parties in the United States, in the past, controlled elections for "candidates were nominated by the party through what was effectively a boss
system" (The Concept of Party is No Longer Relevant, 2002). As we can see the parties are perhaps more focused on candidates rather than party ideals. This information helps
