sight, seen in any school playground, parks and even on the street. Children may be of different ages and the games may be different, but the activity of play is
a universal commonality in all children in all cultures and is not even confined to the human race, but is also seen in the animal kingdom. The process of
play may be seen as a natural instinct as there are many theories regarding the role, but it is more then simply a leisure pursuit, in turn many leisure activities
of children will also play a more important role in their development and impact on the way they mature into adults (Greenfield, 2003). Children will play across a broad
range of activities, from mothers playing with toddlers and their feet to older children and interaction of the children with popular computer games. Play is instinctual to both the children
and the parents. Research has shown that mothers will adapt their play patterns to the same level or a higher level than their child, where the mother has a greater
knowledge of child development they are also more likely to place the play level at slightly above the childs level to help progression take place (Damast et al, 1996). This
indicates that the value of play in more than simply enjoyment, it has an important role to play in learning and development. The purpose of this paper is
to explore the role of play for children, looking at how and why it takes place and the potential outcomes for both able bodies as well as disabled children.
