this tale is in search of mirth, as an apparent escape from loneliness and sadness, and finds it in a number of un-puritan situations. Interestingly, these situations revolve around natural elements, so nature serves to be inexorably intertwined with both good and evil. This poem describes the many sights and sounds the narrator experiences, although his perspective is that of an outsider. He describes the events that occur in the natural world around him, and these examples serve to entice him, and beckon him to enjoy the same. Therefore, in a very basic way, nature in this poem serves to delight the senses, and to arouse the interest of one who is very melancholy but wishes not to be. It is through the glorious descriptions of nature in this poem that one who is so sad can be tempted to think otherwise. This narrator embraces sadness, as evidenced in the very first line of the poem which reads, "Hence loathed melancholy". While it does say that the melancholy was loathed, given the direct nature of this statement and its placement as first in the poem, its evident that the melancholy of the narrator can be viewed as kind of a shroud - miserable but comfortable and familiar at the same time. Its as if the narrator is fearful of letting go of his sadness, not knowing what may become of him if he takes this course.
