the idea of memory. Indeed, it is said that memories are the most important thing in life. Material things can be replaced, but memories are all someone truly possesses that
may be considered to be priceless. Not only that, but memories can help someone to cope with current events, and this is clearly demonstrated in Danticats work. In the
work, memory is an important element and on some level, helps the characters to survive their ordeals. In part, memories are attached to ancestors who have endured hardships, but memory
is also attached to the rekindling of love relationships, such as when Amabelle ponders the love she had for Sebastien. Finally, another important element of memory is when Amabelle is
tortured and cannot remember the correct pronunciation of perejil, a mistake that could have potentially taken her life. That she did not trill the "r" in the word created a
situation where she would surely have been killed, if it were not for the fact that she were rescued. The "r" test is something that may or may not be
related to memory, but clearly, it is something worth noting. There were many rumors that Haitians were killed because they were not able to trill their "r" (Danticat, 114). Yet,
another important memory is associated with the death of Amabelles parents, which is traumatic but also holds memories of a past prior to the incident and may be considered comforting.
On some level, this book is attached to the relevance of memory in getting through chaos and uncertainty. Certainly, drawing on early memories
