alter the structure of the brain as well as the electrical brain activity (Nyborg, 1994). The chemical messengers call on genes and other hereditary material so heredity is contributing to
behavior too (Nyborg, 1994). In other words, behavior is attached in some way to both hormones and heredity. That said, the idea that heredity is largely responsible for human behavior
is no longer thought to be the case (Nyborg, 1994). That is, to some extent, heredity does influence behavior, but not as much as was thought during the nineteenth century
for example (Nyborg, 1994). Environmental influences tend to be more important than heredity and this has been backed up by twin studies (Nyborg, 1994). If heredity is not responsible for
most behavior patterns, why are hormones important in the scheme of things? It seems that the environment changes the rate of secretion of hormones due to factors such as light
and darkness, and the heat and cold that may be present (Nyborg, 1994). Hormones are known to be powerful in directing behavior. The stereotypical female reacts emotionally when her hormone
levels change each month before her menstrual cycle. People who are not on the proper thyroid medication will react behaviorally due to a lack of, or too much, of the
hormone. Hormones clearly affect behavior. This is certainly obvious in the area of sex. Prior to the female bodys development, and the rise of the secretion of hormones, there will
be no desire for sexual experimentation (Campbell, 1998). Hence, the immature female is not interested in sex at all (Campbell, 1998). The role of hormones and behavior in daily life
is well known and almost common knowledge. When a teenager acts out, some say it is just the "hormones" talking. Why? During adolescence, there is a significant change in hormones
