a simple thought experiment. Imagine that its 10 p.m., and a meeting has just broken up. Everyone rushes out to the parking garage and by 10.07, all the cars are
gone except two: one belongs to Jim and one belongs to Jane. Jim will go out, walk up to his car without a second thought and drive away. Jane will
not. She will be nervous about going into a deserted garage at night; she will check under and in the car to make certain no one is waiting to attack
her; and she will be extra-cautious if she has parked in a darkened area. She may even ask a guard to escort her to her car. Its doubtful if any
of these precautions would have even occurred to a man, let alone been acted upon by him, because the kinds of concerns that women have about their personal safety are
not even on a mans radar screen. The reason for this is simple: in our society, violence against women is almost always perpetrated by men. Some people have argued
that our society itself allows men to abuse women because of the fact that they are male. Michael Kaufman writes that when he was 11 or 12, a friend explained
to him the "difference between fucking and raping. It was simple: with rape you tied the woman to a tree" (Kaufman, 1997, p. 5). At that age, Kaufman says, the
