him up and he would end up in the hospital (Cook, 1997). But he received no sympathy from his friends (Cook, 1997). In this patriarchal culture it is not surprising
that men do not get treated the same when it comes to issues of domestic violence as do women. Men are generally stronger than women, and there is so much
information about men beating up women that the male on female violence model is stereotypical. People expect that when domestic violence exists, women are the victims. The truth is that,
sometimes, men are too. In studying the phenomenon of domestic violence, there are many questions which crop up as it relates to gender. There are different types of domestic
violence, inclusive of but not limited to physical and psychological violence. In studying this important topic, one question goes to which gender is more likely to physically abuse their partners.
It is a good question and one would think that men would be the abusers, but the question becomes complex. What is physical abuse anyway? Does it mean beating another
human being exclusively or can other physically violent acts qualify? In studying this subject what becomes interesting is that women are violent too, but not in exactly the same way.
One thing is important to note. Men are generally stronger than women, but when studying violence, women are no less violent, particularly when they are brandishing a weapon. This
should not come as a surprise. Women are stereotyped as being angry a lot. Comedians tell jokes about raging hormones. And women do kill their children sometimes, and this is
