the existing system in an effective manner. These individuals can be parents or educational professionals. In most cases reform occurs because of the actions of a collection of
organizational entities and individuals. In effect then it is these individuals that control the schools. While control may seem way outside our reach, with dedication, perseverance and untiring
labor we can make a difference in todays educational arena. We can only control our schools if we take an active role in
formulating the laws and policies that govern our schools. Our society as a whole determines the overall ethical, social and economic goals of education but we as individuals determine
the finer points. It is the educational professionals and other interested individual, for example, that determine the curriculum and the individual school policies. The curriculum that is used
in a school, for example, is defined not just by one entity but can be defined by many. It can be defined as teaching units, as textbooks and other
classroom material or even from a commercial perspective (Giften Child Today, 2005). That may seem inconsequential but when we realize that there are in actuality many players determining our
educational experience it becomes more meaningful. Still, if we are determined to effect change we can. Consider, for example, the inner city setting described by Pride (2007) where
curriculum was modified to feature hip hop. Sausner (2002), in contrast, describes educational reform in the form of a curriculum featuring nature that was highly appropriate for a specific
