being used in automobiles and in manufacturing artificial limbs. Plastic is everywhere. Indeed, today it is something taken for granted but that has not always been the case. In
the 1960s film The Graduate, Mr. McGuire takes young Ben (played by Dustin Hoffman) aside, and tells him that there is a future in plastics. It was quite a
prediction for a movie. Plastics is big. First, what is plastic? Hutton claims that the "strict definition of a plastic is a synthetic non-metal material that can be shaped
into almost any form." Plastic has been around for quite awhile but many developments took place in this industry during the late 1930s and early 1940s (Hutton). In 1958, elastic
polymer Lycra was born and in 1977, the first plastic that could conduct electricity emerged (Hutton). As plastics became popular, technology would change in a myriad
of ways. Computers emerged during the 1970s, even though they had really gotten a start decades prior to that. It had been in the 1970s that things really started to
change rapidly. The plastics and computer industries seemed to both be growing rather quickly. And while it is true that the plastics industry today makes use of computers, it perhaps
could use it even more. Siweck observes: "...American shops need to understand they must be much better at what they do in the future" (112). Why? American businesses in plastics
has not kept pace with other foreign markets. It seems that poor business methods employed in U.S. plastics companies has caused it not to keep pace with other places like
