This is a 7 page paper discussing the roles of artists and architects in tribal societies. When studying tribal forms of art and architecture, researchers are able to determine what roles artists and architects within the societies played and what the significance of the art and architecture showed. In many ways, by studying the roles artists and architects played and still play within tribal societies, archaeologists can also determine which aspects of the culture are considered significant in the portrayal of tribal life. Largely, artists and architects maintained a unique status within the tribes as those who could interpret the important and influencing spiritual, ancestral, and historical factors with the society and accurately and artistically include them in the functional items or structures they made.

The study of artists in tribal society can be conducted on a world wide scale as researchers are able to carefully dissect each artistic
artifact found and determine its relevance to the society. In West and Central Africa, different forms of "bo" or "bocio" sculpture is compared with what is considered more "common" tribal
art (Okoye 390). The Dahome royalty used artists to make the sophisticated bocio as a way to confront the political and personal issues they faced while running the society. The
art showed a great deal of realism and the artists were employed to depict the historical stories through their art rather than have a great deal of individual freedom in
the depiction of characters. In this case, the artists were employed to tell an accurate account of the daily rituals the leaders of the tribe carried out (Okoye 390). The
"bo" was also commissioned to lead armies into battles with other tribes as means for symbolism of their tribe and inspiration to the men in battle. The bo provided a
