II. DWINDLING DEMOCRACY: LOOKING FORWARD FROM THE PAST Built upon the tenets of democracy, none of the framers could ever imagine how their Constitution has routinely become misconstrued, twisted and blatantly ignored in order to provide more power to the government. Perhaps George Orwells prophetic novel about a totalitarian existence was merely a result of the authors overactive imagination. Maybe, however, it was a warning of how things might become. Orwell (1990), himself, said he did not believe such a society as he describes in 1984 would ever arrive; however, he did believe that something resembling it most definitely could. What exists today is a wholly diluted, veiled form of democracy, where government entities take liberties and make rules that do not abide by the clear-cut convictions of a democratic system of administration. The main image throughout the book is that of crushing power and intimidation cast upon the people by a suppressive government. Yet there exists an underlying hierarchy of power, as well, that transcends through the populace itself, creating other levels of domination among the various ranks. While bureaucracy dominates characters, so, too, are the people who dominate over one another. The novel not only addresses such realities ...
