Essay / Research Paper Abstract
3 pages in length. Metaphors of food, cooking and eating are conspicuously present in Carol Shields' Swann that one cannot help but draw a distinction between the author's blatant symbolic purpose and the position of strength it holds within the concept of culture. Women's place has historically been in the home, tending to everything that has to do with raising a good family; while that is viewed as somewhat of an archaic perspective in contemporary culture, Shields makes it the focal point of her story through the metaphoric use of food in such a way that it transcends typical gender barriers and produces a much stronger teaching for the female place in society. conventional place in society; rather, it is to shape it as the fundamental essence of her importance both in and outside of the kitchen, ultimately expressing the inherent fortitude that
comprises the female spirit. Beyond the gender element of food in Shields Swann is the broader sense of culture as it relates to virtually everything about human composition. Considering
for a moment how nearly all social events - either at home or in public - revolve around food, how almost every celebration - such as national holidays, birthdays and
other reasons for commemoration - are centered around food and how the very foundation of loves expression between and among a family is more than not realized around the dinner
