Find" we are presented with characters who are dysfunctional in one way or another. They are individuals with serious issues, or problems, and they ultimately pay in the end for being warped. The following paper compares and contrasts the mother and the boy from Lawrences story and the Grandmother and the Misfit from OConnors story. "The Rocking Horse Winner" and "A Good Man is Hard to Find" In Lawrences "The Rocking Horse Winner" we have a mother who "was beautiful, who started with all the advantages, yet she had no luck. She married for love, and the love turned to dust. She had bonny children, yet she felt they had been thrust upon her, and she could not love them" (Lawrence). In this introduction we see that she was a woman who expected life to treat her fairly, if not perfectly. She believed that life should be a certain way and she should be able to get all she wanted from that life. She blamed her husband for her lack of luck anymore, and that was the root of all her problems. In OConnors story we have a grandmother who feels that life should also be a certain way. But her views on life are different, or her training in society was different, for her focus was on religion and the proper way things should be done. While the mother in Lawrences story was one who relied on material possessions to show worth and to feel worth, the grandmother was a woman who relied on religion to guide her and she used religion, rather than money, to judge people. The characters who exist in these stories and symbolically proved ultimate enlightenment for these two women are the mothers son and the Misfit who is an escaped ...
