is that of a young boy, Paul, who is desperate become "lucky" so he can win money and ease his familys constant desire for money. He finds an astonishing way
to do this: he rides his rocking horse faster and faster, until he "knows" which horse is going to win at the track (Lawrence). Then he places a bet on
it; if he doesnt "know" the winners name, or cant see it clearly, he wont bet (Lawrence). At the end of the story, Paul rides like a madman until he
"knows" the name of the winner of the Derby, perhaps the most important race in Britain: "Its Malabar!" he screamed in a powerful, strange voice. "Its Malabar!" (Lawrence). Then he
falls from the horse in some sort of fit, and dies three days later. But all those who bet on Malabar have made a lot of money; the question begged
by the story is, is money worth more than life? Lawrences disturbing answer is yes. Who is speaking? The story is written from the perspective of the third-person omniscient narrator.
This narrator doesnt take part in the story, he tells it. He is called omniscient because he knows what all the characters are doing all the time; he is even
privy to their thoughts and feelings. This is different from a first person narrator ("I took a walk"); or the almost impossible to do second person narrator ("You took a
walk"). Its also different from the third person limited narrator, who tells more than first or second narration but still doesnt know everything. The narrator here is like God, able
to describe actions, even when they are taking place miles apart; as well as delving into the emotions, feelings and psychological makeup of the characters. What kind of person is
