The story is easily told: young Paul lives with his mother, father and two sisters, but the house is devoid of love. Both parents are living beyond their means, and there is always a fear in the house that they will be unable to pay their bills. When Paul climbs onto his rocking horse and rides furiously, he "knows" the names of the winners of various races; he has been betting on them and amassed a sizeable amount of money. At the end, he is desperate to win one big race, but he cannot seem to find the name of the horse. Then one night while his parents are at a dinner party he rides the rocking horse and gets the name of the winner; the horse does in fact come first and the boy wins over eighty thousand pounds. But he becomes ill with fever and dies three days later leaving his mother rich; whether or not she truly grieves over his death is difficult to say. The story is very dark and has touches of magical reality in the fact that the boy "rides" until he "gets there"-to the place where he knows the name of the winning horse.1 This suggests that he puts himself into some sort of trance, or opens himself to whatever psychic power he possesses at these times. But lets go back to the beginning. One of the things we notice first is that Pauls mother has no name; she is referred to as "the mother," or "his mother," or "Mother."2 In objectifying her in this way, Lawrence suggests that she stands for all mothers of a particular type; the type that relies on others instead of herself for her happiness.
