the desire and need for land, the harshness of life and the struggles within the individual in a world that is all too unkind at times. In this particular novel, however, we also have very cult-like religious focusing on the land and on sacrificial perspectives. It is a novel about the land and a mans relationship with that land. The following paper examines the purpose and significance of a moss covered rock in Steinbecks novel "To a God Unknown." The Rock In this story we have one man who is truly obsessed with his land, the productivity of his land, and he goes to great lengths to honor his land and his animals. He knows this is his part of his destiny when he approaches his father in the beginning as he prepares to leave his family: "The land doesnt stretch, sir. There wont be enough" (Steinbeck 1). He wants his own land that he can control. As one critic notes, "Steinbeck writes, All things about him . . . were fertile, and Joseph was the source, the root of their fertility; his was the motivating lust. (TGU 22) He goes so far as killing the barren farm animals. That is because only the incessantly increasing life is significant for him, and he can not put everything into the hands of nature in order to continually profit from his land. In the end, his land ceases to be a natural world, and becomes an artificial world where death or loss should be excluded" The moss covered rock is a very vital and symbolic part of the entire relationship that Joseph has with the land.
