The river, while obviously being the most significant setting in the book, is also representative and symbolic of many different things in the novel. The following paper examines the significance and symbolism of the river in Twains "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn." The River Huckleberry Finn, and all the people in his community and other communities, exist beside this grand river that travels incredible distances and goes through many states and regions. It is a river that kept the nation growing and alive in the early days, and it is a river that essentially connects the North and the South. In the beginning of Twains book we see how "down by the village was the river, a whole mile broad, and awful still and grand" (Twain Chapter II). This offers us a look at the powerful and ever-present nature of this river as it will exist in the book. It is a large, and almost invasive, yet also perhaps reassuring, river that is a part of everyones life, no matter what side of the river they exist or dwell on. It is a river that provides for the people, and even provides for Huckleberry. He notes that "The June rise used to be always luck for me; because as soon as that rise begins here comes cordwood floating down, and pieces of log rafts--sometimes a dozen logs together; so all you have to do is to catch them and sell them to the wood-yards and the sawmill" (Twain Chapter VII). In this we see how, even for one small boy, the river means life and survival. It provides for people, but at the same time can be mysterious and dangerous.
