Replacement Therapy - Risks and Benefits Menopause is the irreversible cessation of the female reproductive cycle and menses, which follows from a permanent loss of ovarian response to gonadotropins. This
change generally occurs spontaneously between the ages of 45 and 55 in American women, with an average age of 51 (Mayeaux, 2002).
Once a woman goes through menopause, that is the cessation of her period, often doctors will prescribe hormones to ease the
symptoms of menopause (Hormone Replacement Therapy, 2002). Typically, the hormones prescribed are estrogen and progestin, and the theory underlying such prescriptions is that replacing the hormones in a womans
body will help to ease her menopausal symptoms as well as to protect her from future health risks (Hormone Replacement Therapy, 2002). However, it is important to remember that
hormone replacement therapy, or HRT, has its own risks associated with it (Hormone Replacement Therapy, 2002). Therefore, it is important to understand all associated risks and benefits before embarking
