The world of boxing varies considerably from that surrounding the amateur gym in the small city
and the sometimes glamorous world of professional boxing. All boxers, of course, must go through the loops of amateur boxing before they reach the ranks of the professional.
Many start the sport while they are still children. They join local clubs, and the clubs together form a gym (Africa News Service). Young boxers work their way
up through the hierarchy within the gym itself striving to qualify for competition in local championships. They proceed through Golden Gloves titles and sometimes even the Olympics. Local
championships soon turn into state championships and somewhere along the way the really good boxers catch the eye of an agent who, with the right management, can propel them into
stardom. A professional boxer falls into one of eight divisions according to his weight. These divisions are flyweight, bantamweight, featherweight, lightweight, welterweight, middleweight, light heavyweight, and heavyweight.
The path a boxer follows, however, is bristling with many concerns which will either adversely or positively impact his well being. The intent of this paper is to describe
these concerns which revolve around agents, contractual obligations, and law. The average boxer who is struggling to make his way out of the
neighborhood gym and into the professional sports arena is faced with a number of obstacles. The first of these is gaining the attention which is needed to attract promoters.
