continent and spread to North America via European colonization efforts. In todays world, the economic systems, political systems, and the methods of scientific investigation all originated with Western philosophers and
leaders; however, Eastern civilization predates the West by several thousand years. Why then should Western thought have become predominant to the virtual exclusion of everything that originated in the East?
There have been innumerable theories to account for this fact written in recent years that address the causes of Europes inexorable rise to power and prosperity (Heuser 56). One
such theory is proposed by Geoffrey Parker in his book The Military Revolution: Military innovation and the rise of the West, 1500-1800 (Heuser 56). This theory postulates that the
Western rise to power was due to birth of a military revolution that developed the full potential of gun power, which was then gradually translated into military tactics and strategy
(Heuser 56). This, in turn, gave rise to large, well-disciplined armies eventually caused Europe to dominate a large portion of the globe (Heuser 56). There is quite a bit of
evidence to substantiate this view. For example, in William H. McNeills writings, one can see how military development merged with marketplace behavior to form a sort of capitalistic juggernaut that
rolled over countries that had less military capability with incredibly ease. This commercialization of warfare consisted of "market forces and attitudes" affecting military action as it had never
before done in history. This started in Italy and gradually spread to the rest of the continent. Previously warfare had been based primarily on the social authority that was accorded
to feudal knights. After 1000 A.D. the values and interests of urban merchant-capitalists came to predominate over other factors, thereby leading the development of warfare into a new era. By
