out of the goodness of the hearts of politicians. Rather, labor leaders were integral in getting laws passed regarding safety as well as wages. A student writing on this subject
ought to point out that the mentality of the union is that there is strength in numbers and when there is an issue, a group has more leverage than an
individual. Unlike negotiations on a one to one basis, where the worker begs for a raise, and pleads for a promotion, workers who are union members finally have the upper
hand. What makes collective bargaining so powerful? There is strength in numbers, a point that Wolchok and Grayson (1997) do seem to focus on. Of course, that is the philosophy
behind unionization anyway. The idea is that alone, one worker cannot convince an employer to give him a raise for example, because the owner could always hire a replacement for
one worker who leaves. However, if all workers band together and threaten to stop working, the employer has a problem, particularly if his business is in an industry where time
is important. In fact, time is important for most any business and few industries are not affected by strikes. A student writing on this subject should note that business owners
generally have competing philosophies with laborers. The unions support the lowly workers who only want more money, benefits and security so that they can live comfortably. The business owners merely
