stands as one of the worlds most powerful religions. Such was not always the case, however. Christianity yesterday and even today, in fact, exists alongside hundreds even thousands
of other religions. Current estimates are that there are over five thousand "primitive, folk, and civilized religions in the world today (Dorson 218). In reality, there are probably
many more faith systems which just havent received the recognition necessary to include them in this number. Regardless of the actual number of systems which exist around the world,
each of these faith systems incorporates its own prescription of how they are to relate to the supernatural forces around them and just how these forces intervened to place mankind
on earth. In many ways, therefore, Christianity is quite similar to other religions. The rise of Christianity, however, is particularly fascinating given the relatively short period of time
it has been a dominant world religion. The purpose of this paper is to trace that rise from the days preceding the advent of Christianity, through the birth of
Christ, through His death, and on into the modern day. Since the beginning of time mankind has attempted to provide explanation of the
events they see unfolding around them in the natural world and in interrelationships with other people. Most cultures look to a divine Creator to make such explanations. Their
oral histories are replete with explanation of why the way things are and many times these explanations revolve around a supreme deity or pattern of principles. Just over two
millenia ago another religion made its advent into the world. That religion would soon distinguish itself from the older religions which thrived around it and start its path
