In essence, it is a very complex and well filled novel that speaks of the important issues in life. The following paper examines how Howells examines social and economic problems of particular characters as they essentially shut out reality in pursuit of their own false needs, or desires. The Rise of Silas Lapham In better presenting the ideas that will be examined in relationship to Howells work we first present the following, which is the focus of the paper, and the focus requested by the student: "William Dean Howells examines the social and economic problems in his novel through the perspective of the anxious affluent characters, the dinner party hosts and guests, in whom false needs shut out the reality of life around them. Howells indicated confusion between human nature and social conditions, which create false needs and the Laphams, grow stronger as they learn the differences between false and true needs." The focus of this particular study will be on Chapter XIV of the novel, wherein there is a party and we see the social conditions, expectations, and realities involved in the economic and social world of the Laphams. It is also important to note that the Laphams are people from wealth that was earned through business, while other characters are from "old money" that was earned by ancestors. This is a very important factor in seeing the economic and social issues of the novel, for the old money individuals have been trained, since birth, how to act wealthy and people such as the Laphams have to find their way in such a social world without the early training.
