Abraham Cahans "The Rise of David Levinsky" was first published in 1917. The founder of the "Jewish Daily Forward", Cahan, is legendary for his sensitivity to and treatment of Jewish-American issues. As would be expected, "The Rise of David Levinsky" is a classic in its genre. It relates the story of a young Russian immigrant who arrives in the country penniless in the latter part of the nineteenth century. A Hasidic Jew, a talmudic scholar in fact, this young immigrant finds a world which is very different from the one he left behind in Russia. The novel progresses as a classic "rags to riches" story yet it is much more. Set in New York City, Cahans novel manages to convey not only the spirit and sometimes deplorable circumstances of nineteenth century industrial America but also the inner workings of a man who is simultaneously destined for great economic successes and devastating personal disappointments. Born in Antomir, in the Northwestern Region, Russia, in 1865, the protagonist David Levinsky was raised by his mother. His father had died when he was very young, so young in fact that he had only a couple of fleeting memories of him. His mothers life was hard yet she managed to provide for the young boys physical and emotional nurturing. His meager beginnings, beginnings in which a cheap tin cup was repaired rather than thrown away and beginnings in which a meal often consisted solely of a slice of bread, no doubt fueled the inner strength which would one day allow him to rise to join the ranks of the American millionaires. ...
