of what once was in this town that once thrived. Authors point out that indeed, at one time the economy was vibrant and dependent upon the steel industry. Yet, the
decline of the factory was seemingly a stepping-stone to further decline. Things would get worse in part due to the devastation of an industry. Crime would rise. People were out
of work. The people even to some extent would get together in order to try to save what was left of the industry but it was to no avail.
It was towards the end of the 1970s that the decline was truly felt and many people were laid off from the factory. Linkon & Russo (2002) do focus on
Youngstown, but while the facts may be correct, this Ohio town is just one example of what happens when things decline. There are many other cities like this. The steel
industry was further hurt by NAFTA. Certainly, global trade enters the picture. In some way, it is unfortunate that a lucrative industry for America had been suddenly taken away. That
is, the people who moved to these industrial cities made their lives there. Those who were employees of these factories would move their families to the towns, and their offspring
would end up working for the factory too. While those in large cities who work in white-collar professions may not be able to comprehend this type of situation, for the
factory families, there is no other way of life. Hence, the rise of the factory town was something that was good for American. Quite expectedly, the fall of the cities
