I. Although he had sons and grandsons to share his name, it is the original Napoleon who had intrigued many throughout history and created discussion about whether or not he
was a villain or a do-gooder. Most do agree that he was interested in self-preservation and conquest. Yet, many also believe that he had done good for France despite his
preoccupation with himself and his family. Further, his influence permeates national borders. During the Napoleonic war period, there were many countries captured, and while that does not sound pleasant, Poland
is one country that seemed to embrace this conqueror. In fact, Poland is the only country in the world to use Napoleons influence in its national anthem (Nieuwazny, 1998). It
is rather awesome that while Napoleon had only been in control of some of these other countries, and France for that matter for such a short time, his influence was
startling. In fact, the heritage of Napoleonic Poland, is significant; for example, the abolition of serfdom and the overthrow of the feudal system is striking (Nieuwazny, 1998). His legacy
is great. He created the foundations of a new, bourgeois society and modern bureaucracy and introduced the Napoleonic Code (1998).Only the Napoleonic Code survived after 1831 in Poland (1998).
Still, Napoleon is remembered in Poland as well as in France. But of course, France was Napoleons home turf. He was of course more influential there than in any of
the other nations. Some say he wanted to be king and while in France that could not be. He did crown himself king of Milan cathedral in 1805 (Mansel
39). In fact, an example of a Napoleonic palace interior can be viewed in Venice, in what is now the Museo Correr on the Piazza San Marco where from 1807
