the longest-serving Governor in the history of the state. He declared his candidacy for the office of President of the United States in August 2011. Perry is a native Texan.
He was born in a small community in Haskell County. His parents were tenant farmers. He is a Methodist and attends one of the evangelical mega-churches in Austin. Perry likes
to take on the persona of a hick but while in the Air Force, he flew planes over the Middle East in the 1970s and he has been on 23
foreign trade missions as Governor of Texas.i He has probably been on more foreign trade missions than most other governors, which gives him a degree of worldliness with knowledge of
other nations and cultures. Under Perrys leadership, jobs in Texas increased by over 10 percent between 2000 and 2007.ii That was the equivalent of more than 1 million jobs in
the state. Roarty commented that even with all these new jobs created in the state, the unemployment rate in Texas is somewhere around 8 percent due to their increasing population
so while he created jobs, there is still a high unemployment rate. Texas is one of the few states that has no state income tax and Perry has consistently fought
to continue this tax advantage for citizens. Roarty also noted that business taxes are lower in Texas than in other states, which attracts more businesses and leads to more jobs.
Perry has not done as good a job in education, poverty, or health insurance. Roarty also reported that Texas has the lowest rate of high school graduates of any state,
the poverty rate is 17 percent, and 24 percent of the population does not have health insurance, which is the highest rate in the country. Perry held other political offices
