Roman art has influenced many forms of art throughout the ages, not the least of which is the field of architecture as it involves social, political, and religious values. The Romans were known for creating great pieces of art known as sarcophagi. The following paper examines "The Return of the Body of Meleager to Kalydon" and "The Indian Triumph of Dionysus" both of which are Roman sarcophagi relieves. The paper examines each one individually and then presents a brief comparison and discussion of the two. The Return of the Body of Meleager to Kalydon "Burials are often the source of and reason for the preservation of many artworks from antiquity. This sarcophagus, a coffin carved in stone, is from the late Severan period and was made to hold the body of a wealthy Roman."1 The individual figures that are portrayed on the sarcophagus illustrate "a famous story from mythology about the death of the young prince, Meleager. At his birth, the Fates decreed that Meleager would live only as long as a log in the fire remained intact."2 The story continues: "Hearing this, his mother, Althaea, rescued the log from the fire. Meleager grew to manhood and became a famous hunter."3 At one point, however, when he had killed a boar that had terrorized the people, he got into an argument with his uncles and killed them. "When Althaea learned of her brothers? deaths, she took the log from its hiding place and threw it into the fire. Meleager began to weaken until finally he died."4 Then there is a picture of Althaea grieving for her son.
