real events in a small French town, events which caused an uproar for the years that following it, and created a mesmerizing tale of identity and intrigue. It is the
story of one mans departure and another mans arrival, with the other man claiming to be the first man. Most Americans know the story through the film starring Richard Gere
and Jodi Foster titled "Sommersby," which is a remake of the French film "The Return of Martin Guerre." The following paper examines Davis work, discussing the events, talking about the
French society at the time, and analyzing the characters. The Return of Martin Guerre The story involves, as would be expected, the man known as Martin Guerre. Martin,
a man who seemed to enjoy adventure and swordplay more than hard work, marries Bertrande de Rols who is the daughter of a very prominent local family. The couple spend
a great deal of time trying to have a child, something crucial to the character of Bertrande. They finally have a son but things are still not well in their
relationship or in Martins position within the community or family. His father accuses Martin of stealing grain and this, combined with other family arguments, results in Martin leaving to go
have adventures and leave responsibility behind. This puts Bertrande in a very difficult position for she is left to run her household and finances on her own, although her
uncle helps. But, after some time a man appears, a man who looks just like Martin, and a man who actually knew Martin and learned all there was to know
about him. He claims to be Martin and quickly takes charge of all the affairs of the family, and quickly becomes the man that Bertrande perhaps always wanted, a responsible
