The drug is making a "comeback" since the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) recommended it for limited use in treating leprosy and AIDS-related conditions. The student writing on this
topic should review the FDAs recommendations, as well researching the problems proven to exist with the drug. The drug was never legally introduced
or marketed in the United States. Its producer and distributor was Richardson-Merrell (currently, Dow Chemical) and was given the brand name "Kevadon." Richardson-Merrell distributed over 2.5 million tablets to
1,267 U.S. doctors for "clinical trials" who in turn handed them out to about 20,000 American patients. Victims of the drug in the United States is estimated to be
less than two dozen. However, in Australia, Canada, Sweden, and Australia hundreds of people were affected. In Japan and (then) West Germany, where a prescription was not required for
the drug, thousands were affected - approximately 1,000 in Japan and approximately 6,000 in Germany (Times of London). Deformities caused by thalidomide included babies being born with: phocomelia (shortening of
the limbs); missing limbs, fingers, and/or toes; webbed fingers and/or toes; extra fingers and/or toes; partial or total hearing and/or vision loss; paralysis (usually of the facial muscles); improper formation
of the digestive tract; improper formation of the anus (most often fatal before or soon after birth); lesions on major organs (also most often fatal before or soon after birth);
