standing duty. Discussion All branches of the military are governed by eleven basic General Orders. The first general order suggests one of the responsibilities of standing duty; it says the
military person has a duty "To take charge of this post and all government property in view" (The eleven general orders of a sentry). The first responsibility of a sentry
then is to protect government property. General order number 2 is: "To walk my post in a military manner, keeping always on the alert, and observing everything that takes
place within sight or hearing," which speaks to the way in which duty is to be performed and gives an idea of the discipline demanded of the armed forces (The
eleven general orders of a sentry). However, general order 6 gives us another responsibility of the sentry: he (or she) is "To receive, obey, and pass on to the sentry
who relieves me all orders from the commanding officer, field officer of the day, officer of the day, and officers and petty officers of the watch" (The eleven general orders
of a sentry). This is a very important responsibility: it means that the sentry is responsible for accurately relaying any information to the sentry that relieves him. If information is
not given correctly and in a timely manner, serious breaches of security can result. General order 8 instructs the sentry "To give the alarm in case of fire or disorder,"
which tells us that another responsibility is the safety of personnel, equipment and facilities that could be damaged by fire or disorder (The eleven general orders of a sentry). The
last general order, #11, instructs the sentry "To be especially watchful at night, and during the time for challenging, to challenge all persons on or near my post, and to
