development of new theory, but may also involve the adaption, improvements and implementation of existing theory. When examining the problem in such a practical approach it needs to be
recognised that problems can be highly complex, often paradoxical in nature with different needs of various stakeholders. Charles Handy, a well respected management guru has recognised the contradictions which exist
and argues that it is a mangers job to find ways of managing these conflicts (Calton and Payne, 2003). Interestingly, Churchman (1967) raises an interesting issue when looking at complex
problems, which he refers to as wicked problems; whether it is morally wrong to solve only a part of a problem rather than the entire problem. While arguing it
may be morally wrong to solve only a part of a problem, it is noted that honesty, and recognition of only a partial solution to any problem can become morally
acceptable (Churchman, 1967). This is pertinent when considering research on business as the DBA is taking the practical approach to which this argument may be applied. In the context
of research in the business enjoinment, any problem that is chosen for investigation is likely to be paradoxical due to the different stakeholders involved and the way in which there
will be many influences. This is partially true in industries where there are far reaching consequences of any decisions made and as such a large number of very diverse stakeholders;
the oil and gas industry is an example of one that is particularly complex. There is a strong argument that the researcher is one of these stakeholders, while they
may not have a vested income in a particular outcome, they are involved in the way that the research takes place and have an interest in achieving an outcome. Furthermore,
