This is a 3 page paper discussing man’s inner qualities which are revealed in the characters in Golding’s “Lord of the Flies”. English novelist William Golding (1911-1993) wrote his novel the “Lord of the Flies” in 1954 about a story of a group of English schoolboys who are marooned on an island without adult supervision. While the story takes place during World War II after their plane is shot down and the pilot is killed, the novel does not involve the war per se but more so how children, humans, left to their own accord without rules and a structured society return to their base and “uncivilized” instincts. Because of this, many of the characters within the novel represent some of the basic inner qualities considered within all humans; qualities which may or may not be revealed during a civilized lifetime but which nevertheless most likely exist within all individuals. Because of this, many of the characters within the novel represent some of the basic inner qualities considered within all humans; qualities which may or may not be revealed during a civilized lifetime but which nevertheless most likely exist within all individuals. The major characters of the novel, namely: Piggy, Ralph, Simon, Roger, Jack, Sam and Eric, not only represent inner aspects within humans but are also representative of the basic human (qualities) which can exist. Piggy (and his glasses) represents the desire for social order and civilization within humans - and within many of the characters at the beginning of the novel. Piggy is considered more so an intellectual and represents the modern man and reason who, for instance, uses his glasses to start fire - representative of life on the island. Piggy clings hard to the idea of order and civilization but he also is physically weak compared to the others and his struggle to retain orderliness proves difficult. Similarly, order and democracy within the human race has also proven to be difficult to maintain as conflicts often arise which overcome many peaceful resolutions (Golding, 1959; Gerenser, 2003). Ralph, like Piggy, also represents democracy and social order but nevertheless maintains a conflict with Jack throughout the entire novel.
