as active audience theory as well as common sense that there will be an interpretation of events in relationship to the way in which the written word is interpreted (Slater,
1997). In 2002 the Gujarat riots attracted a great deal of attention in the local and national press of India. The events lasted between February 2002 and May 2002
and resulted in hundreds of deaths and thousands of injured. An event such as this is likely to attract wide scale coverage. However, the press also has a responsibly in
such situation to avoid enflaming emotions and worsening the situation. Papers will often sell to represent the feelings of the readership and reflect those values in order to sell the
newspapers, but the style and content of reporting is meant to be governed by guidelines from the Press Council of India to avoid sensationalism an inciting more riots. The difficulty
with any type of sectarian violence is the extremely of the views and the divisions that are caused within society. However, the press, with the way in which information is
reported, must also accept they have a responsibility. At this time it has been argued that the vernacular press used sensationalism and breached press council rules on many occasions and
have been cited as acting as an "agent provocateur" (Gurnani, 2002). We can asses the way in which this was reported and look at the differences between the English
speaking press and the language press at the time of the riots and consider how they abided or breaches the press council rules. The background to this indicates the
