these problems is important in order to better understand the reasons why the Arab world is in such a current state of flux. The history of this Arab struggle
dates back to the beginning of the 19th century, and todays issues are clearly the culmination of literally decades worth of struggles.
One of the important struggles that the Arab world currently faces is the disunity among nation states (Islam in the Modern World, 2004). While many attempts continue to
be made toward this end, the inability of the Arab world to peacefully coexist and in fact even unify has been one of its major weaknesses (Islam in the Modern
World, 2004). However, it is important to realize that this disunity is difficult to change based upon historic precedents (Islam in the Modern World, 2004). More specifically, the
original intent of the Arab world seeking its independence from colonial rule was not just for political gain (Islam in the Modern World, 2004). In fact, Arabs were desperate
for the ability to express their own cultural identity as well (Islam in the Modern World, 2004). With the Islamic fight
against oppression in the early 19th century, many reformers began to inundate the Islamic world, thus inserting many pivotal beliefs and values within the Arabic ideal (Islam in the Modern
World, 2004). Interestingly, there were many reformers who specifically addressed the concerns of dealing with the Western worlds powerful science and technology influences (Islam in the Modern World, 2004).
