F. Scott Fitzgeralds portrait of Jay Gatsby resonates with almost every reader because he is so human in his hopes and dreams. This paper discusses several aspects of this remarkable
book. Discussion The books fascination lies, in part, with the fact that Fitzgerald praises and condemns the so-called "American Dream" at the same time. The American Dream is the belief
that anyone, no matter who they are, can succeed and grow rich of they work hard, obey the law and perhaps, contribute to their community. The fact that this is
absolute BS is shown clearly by the number of people who work hard all their lives and are never able to do more than pay bills; they have no cushion,
no extra money for the "little things," no vacations to Hawaii. They are never secure and never rich despite their hard work. Fitzgerald suggests that the American Dream is not
what its cracked up to be by celebrating Gatsbys wealth - an integral part of the Dream - but suggesting that hes gained it illegally. He is, in fact, examining
the concept of the American Dream and condemning it at the same time. East and West Egg: The two communities are on Long
